What it is & why it’s famous
The Shell Grotto is a network of narrow underground passages and a chamber whose walls and ceiling are covered in intricate shell mosaics — roughly 4.6 million shells in total. It was reportedly discovered in 1835, but the age and purpose remain a mystery, which is half the fun. It’s officially Grade I listed and open to the public.
