Ramsgate has a proud connection to Operation Dynamo, the 1940 evacuation of Dunkirk where hundreds of “little ships” ferried stranded Allied soldiers to safety. In May 2026 the town honours that history with a four-day extravaganza as the Dunkirk Little Ships return to Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour. Running from 22 May to 25 May and timed to follow the 85th-anniversary commemoration, the event invites locals and visitors to step back in time and celebrate community spirit.
The schedule reads like a vintage postcard. Friday 22 May sees the Little Ships arriving at the harbour to the sound of brass bands. Harbourside venues host live music and funfair rides light up the waterfront. On Saturday 23 May Ramsgate High Street becomes a handmade market, children try craft workshops, military vehicles roll into town and a replica Spitfire parks up for photos.
Sunday 24 May is about remembrance; the Sea Cadets perform a moving sunset ceremony and a Tommy Silhouette Parade winds through the streets at sundown. The finale on Monday 25 May features a 1940s military vehicle parade, a town parade and commemorative service, plus the rare chance to climb aboard one of the Little Ships that took part in the evacuation. Throughout the weekend local businesses, the Ramsgate Tunnels and community groups host exhibitions, talks and pop-ups.
This isn’t just a history lesson; it’s a living celebration of courage and camaraderie. Kids can hear veterans’ stories over fish-and-chips, vintage car buffs can geek out over restored vehicles, and everyone can toast the sailors who risked everything in 1940. Ramsgate’s Operation Dynamo events always mix solemn remembrance with seafront fun, and the 2026 edition looks set to be the biggest yet. Pack your union jack bunting, take a harbour stroll at dusk and imagine the courage it took for those Little Ships to cross the channel 86 years ago. It’s history you can hear, see and feel – all against the beautiful backdrop of Kent’s only royal harbour.
